Artist Model 1: Jerry Uelsmann

Artist Model 1: Jerry Uelsmann

Artist Model 3: Noell Oszvald

Artist Model 2: Antonio Palmerini

Jerry Uelsmann uses black and white multiple imaging to create a surreal universe. This particular image uses harsh studio side lighting to illuminate one side of the subjects face and to allow him to merge the images more effectively. The black and white gives the image a macabre feel. It almost allows you to sympathise further with the subject than if it was in colour as depression and sadness is usually linked with the colours black and white.

Jerry Uelsmann also incorporates hands and eyes into many of his photographs.

Eyes are often thought of as the window to the soul and allows you to truly capture the emotion behind the image as we see in this example.

The composition in this image is very interesting the main focus is to the fist as it is larger and the gaps between the fingers act as leading lines from the bottom right hand corner towards the subjects face which is slightly out of focus again drawing the attention towards the fist.

I searched the internet but could not find much information on this particular artist but it looks as though Antonio Palemirini uses long exposures, double exposures and high contrast in photo editing to create a dream-like and old quality to his images. Like Jerry Uelsmann Antonio Palemerini exclusively photographs in black and white with conveys the ideas of depression and sadness. However the blurring effect creates a sense of uncertainty, eeriness and almost mystery in the image.

The composition of this image is interesting because the subject is inbetween the centre line and the third line and is not straught as you can see from the corner of the wall they are resting on.

Palemirini Like Jerry Uelsmann used high contrast, side, studio lighting which effectively draws the eye to the main subject matter.

To create her images Noel Oszvald uses a mixture of multiple imaging and painting over the images to create the clean, simplistic, surreal effect.

Unfortunately I couldnt find much information on her images as she is a fairly new photographer and doesnt write anything about her images other than a title so that people can interperate them any way they choose.

I chose Noell Oszvald as my artist model because her images are so thought provoking and mysterious similar to Antonio Palemirini  but she expresses this through use of simplicity that I would like to incorporate into my own work especially as though I feel my last series was particularly busy.
